Etched Stencil VS Laser Steel Stencil VS CNC Stencil

Solder paste is used whether you are a prototype factory or a DYI surface-mount PCB manufacturer. Solder paste is applied to SMT pads, and then the soldering electronics are firmly adhered to the copper surface using a reflow. SMT stencils are the most cost-effective way to apply solder paste onto the SMT pads. How to make holes in SMT stencils is the question. This section will cover three different ways to make SMT stencils.

You could use a 4-mil sheet of stainless steel in this method. Turn off all PCB layers other than the SMT pads layer (the separation layer) after you have completed the PCB design. You can create a 2D CNC by exporting a.dxf or other file format. G-code is understood by most CNCs. You can then use your favourite software to create the G-code files. Mach 3 is a good choice. You can also search online for a G-code converter, or you can prepare your G code according to the size of your SMT pads. It is important to set up the CNC with a PCB cutting tool that suits your needs. Once the G code is loaded into the CNC, the CNC will easily cut the steel to create through holes on the steel plate. You can use CNC to easily make SMT stencils.

Chemical etchants are another way to create SMT stencils. We will use the same 4-mil stainless sheet in this case. Instead of exporting a PCB Design.dxf, you can create a.png with a 1:1 scale. It is recommended that, unlike the CNC.dxf files, you make the SMT pad white and the other parts black. This file is your mask. Do not forget to mirror the.png if necessary. This mask can be transferred to steel plates using a variety of methods. Toner transfer and ultraviolet exposure are two of the methods. Toner transfer is used to prepare small PCB prototyping, while UV exposure can be used on small prototypes. Before transferring the mask onto the steel plate, it is recommended that the plates be cleaned with acetone and alcohol. The mask will be well transferred to the stencil. After that, it is taped over the remainder of the stencil. This protects the steel plate from corrosion. The sheet is dipped in a hydrogen-peroxide solution which dissolves the exposed areas. After cleaning, the SMT stencil can be used.
